Education Manager

Reports To: Director of Operations and Planning

Location: Stamford, CT. Office based with flexibility for virtual working. Travel expected within Fairfield County.
Type: This post may be offered on an employed or independent contractor basis. Evening and weekend hours required.  We envision a work schedule of a maximum of 3 days/21 hours a week.
Salary/hourly rate: Negotiable
Employees receive a 2% contribution to a retirement account and four weeks of paid vacation (pro rata) in addition to which the office is closed between Christmas and New Year and on Fridays from July 4 to Labor Day. The orchestra recognizes all federal holidays.
The organization is mindful of ensuring a good work/life balance with great flexibility for personal issues and time off as required.

JOB SUMMARY

The Education Manager will play a pivotal role in planning, coordinating, and implementing educational programs and initiatives that promote the appreciation of orchestral music. This position requires a passion for music education, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including schools, community organizations, musicians, and orchestra staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordination:
  • Working with the Director of Operations and Director of Audience Engagement, assist in the development and execution of educational programs, workshops, and concerts tailored for schools and community groups balancing community visibility and strategic seven-town representation
  • Manage existing programs with schools and in the community across our seven-town strategy ensuring the Orchestra delivers relevant and meaningful programs to all partners. Current programs include Reading and Rhythm (in English and Spanish), Chamber Music program in collaboration with youth music organizations, masterclasses, classroom visits, Link Up, Artists in the Community, and more.
  • Deepen programming with youth music programs including Project Music, INTEMPO, Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras, and Concordia Conservatory.
  • Coordinate logistics for educational events, including scheduling, transportation, and equipment needs.
  • Communicate with educators, students, and parents to ensure successful program participation and engagement.
Administrative Support:
  • Handle the payroll and budget for all programs and activities.
  • Maintain detailed records of program participation, feedback, and outcomes.
  • Assist with the preparation of educational materials, including study guides, program notes, and promotional content.
  • Manage registration processes for educational events and workshops.
  • Support and assist with fundraising for Education and Community Engagement programming by collaborating on funding requests and reports
Community Engagement:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local schools, community organizations, and other educational partners.
  • Represent the orchestra at community events, workshops, and meetings to promote educational initiatives.
  • Reimagine pre-concert activities for orchestra concerts, with emphasis on Musikids
  • Collaborate with musicians and educators to create impactful and relevant educational content.
Evaluation and Reporting:
  • Collect and analyze participant and stakeholder feedback to assess program effectiveness.
  • Prepare reports on educational activities and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications and reports related to educational programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, Arts Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in music education, program coordination, or a related field.
  • Experience working with schools and/or community organizations is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • Passion for music and a commitment to music education.
  • Creative and proactive problem solver.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, as required by program schedules.
  • Some local travel to schools and community venues.
  • Spanish speaker preferred.

About Orchestra Lumos

Formerly Stamford Symphony, Orchestra Lumos was the outcome of a re-imagining and rebranding exercise to reflect a new vision for the Orchestra through which it seeks to engage with everyone in the Fairfield County community, with a particular emphasis on new and diverse audiences.
The organization has established a successful suite of programs that it delivers with education partners, which runs smoothly. The new priority of this post is to develop community engagement opportunities with the widest range of partners to ensure we are relevant and accessible to more of the community. We also seek to expand delivery to more of the county and deliver a more equitable share of presentations in more towns while still recognizing the importance of Stamford. We would expect the post holder to build relationships with libraries, museums, nature centers, retirement communities, hospitals, breweries, malls, community centers, places of worship, young professional organizations, chambers of commerce, rotary clubs, Men’s and Women’s Clubs, and others.
The Orchestra provides:
  • High quality classical concerts under Music Director Michael Stern at The Palace Theatre in Stamford, CT, with Yo-Yo Ma, Anwen Deng and Gabriel Kahane.
  • Ten Small Space (chamber music) presentations offered in churches, libraries, and nature centers from Greenwich to Bridgeport
  • A comprehensive community engagement and education program delivered with public school districts, after school music organizations and other community partners
  • A pops season including an annual movie with the Orchestra playing the soundtrack live
